More than music — this is a movement. The Afro-Caribbean Jazz Ensemble is where young musicians connect their talent to the powerful rhythms and stories of the Caribbean diaspora. Here, jazz meets bomba, plena, and salsa, and every beat carries history, pride, and possibility. Together, we’ll trace how the beats that shaped the Caribbean are now fueling a global sound, and how today’s artists are using music to reclaim identity, challenge norms, and move culture forward.

The Afro-Latin Percussion Apprenticeship at SRBCC immerses participants in the rhythms, instruments, and histories that shape Afro-Puerto Rican and Afro-Caribbean music. Under the mentorship of experienced percussionists, apprentices develop solid technique on traditional and contemporary instruments—including barriles de bomba, panderos de plena, congas, bongó, and timbales—while building strong listening, groove, and ensemble skills. Sessions emphasize cultural context, improvisation, and the role of percussion as the heartbeat of community-based music and dance. Throughout the spring, percussion apprentices work in direct collaboration with the Afro-Caribbean Jazz Ensemble Apprenticeship, forming the core rhythm section of a shared set that culminates in a showcase at SRBCC.

Más que música: esto es un movimiento. El “Afro-Caribbean Jazz Ensemble” es el espacio donde jóvenes músicos conectan su talento con los ritmos y las historias de la diáspora caribeña. Aquí, el jazz se encuentra con la bomba, la plena y la salsa, y cada toque del tambor lleva historia, orgullo y posibilidades. Juntos, seguiremos el rastro de cómo los ritmos que dieron forma al Caribe hoy están impulsando un sonido global, y cómo los artistas contemporáneos están usando la música para reclamar identidad, desafiar normas y hacer avanzar la cultura.

La Pasantía de Percusión Afro-Latina en SRBCC sumerge a los participantes en los ritmos, instrumentos e historias que dan forma a la música afropuertorriqueña y afrocaribeña. Bajo la mentoría de percusionistas con experiencia, los aprendices desarrollan una técnica sólida en instrumentos tradicionales y contemporáneos—incluyendo barriles de bomba, panderos de plena, congas, bongó y timbales—mientras fortalecen la escucha, el groove y las destrezas de tocar en un grupo musical. Las sesiones enfatizan el contexto cultural, la improvisación y el papel de la percusión como el latido de la música y la danza comunitarias. A lo largo de la primavera, los aprendices de percusión trabajarán en colaboración directa con el programa de Afro-Caribbean Jazz Ensemble, formando la sección rítmica central de un repertorio compartido que culmina en una presentación final en SRBCC en mayo.
