SUMMARY:Nuestra Lírica: Hip hop de Pe-erre & The Chi
DESCRIPTION:This Independence Day weekend\, as Chicago’s Puerto Rican community gathers in Humboldt Park for the historic Jolgorio Boricua: No Kings\, No Colonies celebration—a call for self-determination\, cultural affirmation\, and solidarity—Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center welcomes two influential voices from Puerto Rico\, rapper Siete Nueve and producer\, DJ\, finger drummer\, and MC El S\, for a special residency at La Resi and an unforgettable evening dedicated to the power of words. \nNuestra Lírica: Hip hop de Pe-erre & The Chi brings together artists whose work reminds us that lyrics are more than entertainment—they are memory\, testimony\, resistance\, healing\, and imagination. \nJoining Siete Nueve and El S are two of Chicago’s most compelling voices: Chicago Poet Laureate Mayda Del Valle and acclaimed hip-hop artist Pinqy Ring. Together\, these artists will share performances\, stories\, creative process\, and dialogue exploring how poetry and music shape identity\, challenge injustice\, preserve culture\, and inspire transformation. \nThroughout the evening\, audiences will experience live performances\, artist conversations\, dj sets\, and moments of collective reflection that blur the boundaries between concert\, poetry reading\, community gathering\, and cultural dialogue. Rooted in the spirit of Puerto Rico and Chicago\, Nuestra Lírica celebrates the artists who use words to build bridges\, reclaim narratives\, and envision freer futures. \nTICKETS \n

With our community mobilizing around the Together for Venezuela benefit on Sunday\, July 12\, along with several important cultural events taking place throughout the weekend\, we believe postponing the concert is the most responsible decision. \nYour July 11 ticket will be honored for Together for Venezuela\, taking place at SRBCC on Sunday\, July 12\, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Richard Peña will open the benefit with his Equilibrio Jazz Trio\, joining a powerful lineup of local artists raising funds for earthquake-relief efforts in Venezuela. \nYou may choose either of the following options: \n• Use your existing ticket for Together for Venezuela on Sunday\, July 12\n• Request a full refund for your July 11 ticket \nWe sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and deeply appreciate your understanding and continued support of Richard Peña\, SRBCC\, and our broader cultural community. \nYou can also catch Richard Peña free of charge at the Chicago Latin Jazz Festival on Friday\, July 10. We hope you will join us this weekend\, whether at the festival\, the Together for Venezuela benefit\, or other important community gatherings such as the Barrio Arts Festival in Humboldt Park\, organized by our friends at the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture. \n————————————————————————————————— \nPOSTPONED \nJoin Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center for an intimate night of Afro-Caribbean jazz with Puerto Rican guitarist and composer Richard Peña\, returning to SRBCC with his newest project\, Equilibrio. \nPresented during Peña’s stay at La Resi\, SRBCC’s artist residency\, this special album presentation brings together the rhythmic heartbeat of Puerto Rico’s Afro-Caribbean traditions with the harmonic richness\, improvisational depth\, and energy of modern jazz. Rooted in rhythms such as bomba\, plena\, guaracha\, and son\, Equilibrio reflects Peña’s search for balance between tradition and innovation\, with a trio sound shaped through constant musical conversation. \nThis evening also supports SRBCC’s Artist Fund\, which helps finance artist fees and sustain our commitment to paying artists with dignity. Your presence and donations directly help SRBCC continue creating opportunities for local\, visiting\, emerging\, and established artists of color. \n
