DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us as we prepare to represent Puerto Rico at Navy Pier’s annual International Carnival. This year we enlisted the help of Noel Rosado (Viento de Agua\, La Máquina Insular\, Roberto Roena y su Apollo Sound) to take our plena to the next level. Joining Rosado we have Los Pleneros de Don Segundo “agrandado” with a heavy horn section. We will have food while supplies last\, BYOB policy y mucha plena! \n  \n \n  \nErik Noel Rosado\, musician\, percussionist and singer. He was born in Brooklyn\, New York\, in 1966 and grew up in Puerto Rico\, between Carolina and Villas Palmeras. He is a student of masters of Caribbean percussion and Puerto Rican culture. Among them\, Angel Cachete Maldonado\, Luis Daniel Cepeda\, Giovanny Hidalgo\, Modesto Cepeda\, Antony Carrillo and Tito Matos among other greats. He has collaborated as a percussionist\, chorus and singer in orchestras and groups in the genres of salsa\, merengue\, rumba\, bomba\, plena and more. Groups such as\, Los Hermanos Cepeda\, Areyto\, Conjunto Tipikón\, Pleneros del Truco\, Truco y Zaperoko\, Los Majaderos de Cachete\, Yubá Iré\, Roberto Roena\, José Alberto “El Canario\,” and Tito Nieves. Since Tito Matos’ return to Puerto Rico\, for over 20 years he has formed part of Viento de Agua.

CISC artistic director\, Saladeen Alamin was awarded the Andy Vasquez Award for contributions to Latin dance at the World Salsa Congress\, San Juan\, PR\, July\, 2003. The executive producers\, Rosita and Saladeen\, have received awards for their vision and contributions to Latin music\, culture and dance by the World Salsa Congress in San Juan\, PR (July\, 2003 and 2005)\, Philadelphia Salsa Congress in 2008 and the LA Salsa Congress in California (May\, 2005).

This shared cultural tradition features a musical style that has the harp and the cuatro as its core musical instruments and is danced with fast-paced footwork in groups or with couples. \n\n\n\nLos Pleneros de Don Segundo (Puerto Rico)\n\nBorn at Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center (SRBCC)\, Los Pleneros de Don Segundo have been playing original plena in Chicago since 2016. Los Pleneros have evolved to be one of Chicago’s most sought-after Afro-Puerto Rican folkloric groups due its unwavering commitment to the advancement of the genre with original compositions and arrangements. After incorporating Bomba into their repertoire in the last two years\, the group can adapt to a wide variety of formats\, from a basic 4-member ensemble to a full Puerto Rican carnival experience with horns\, vejigantes\, cabezudos and stilt wa \n\n\n\nSambrazilian (Brazil/Samba)\n\nFounded by Damares Santos and Elaine Norwood in late 2019\, both from Río de Janeiro\, Sambrazilian’s goal is to deliver the authentic experience of Carnival all over Illinois. Choreographer Elaine Norwood attended samba school since she was a child and has performed at carnival parades for years. The group’s main dance style is samba\, but they also perform other Latin dance styles. \n\n\n\n\nGrupo Folclórico Viva Panamá (Panama)\n\nFounded in July 1996 by Migdalia Barton\, the Grupo Folclórico Viva Panamá performs a wide variety of Panamanian folkloric dances that are the product of the fusion of Spanish (particularly Andalusian)\, indigenous and West African cultures. The group’s mission is to promote the rich culture of Panama through dance and is known for its colorful traditional costumes\, such as the Panamanian pollera\, and by its interpretation of such popular dances such as the tamborito and cumbia\, which are fundamental parts to Panamanian folklore. \n\n\nChicago Salsa Congress (Mixed)\n\n\nThe Chicago International Salsa Congress (CISC) is the longest\, continuously running salsa congress in the Americas. Open to the general public\, beloved by loyal Latin music and dance aficionados internationally\, this spectacular showcase of Latin and Afro-Caribbean dance\, music and culture is unsurpassed among Chicago’s annual Latin events. The CISC is produced by Cultural Expressions Productions\, which was founded by Rosita and Saladeen Alamin over 34 years ago: \nCrescente \nCrescente is an all ladies bachata team which was founded in 2020 by Marcos Raygoza and rebranded later in 2023 adding alongside a co-director\, Marko Hernandez. As a rapper\, Telmary uses her distinctive voice\, at times deep and soulful\, at times fast and aggressive\, to proclaim a positive\, empowering message that contrasts with the genre’s commercial norm. After working with Free Hole Negro in 1999 and Interactivo in 2002\, she launched her solo career with A Diario\, produced by acclaimed Cuban pianist and Interactivo leader Roberto Carcasses and winner of the Cubadisco award for Best Hip Hop Album in 2007. After seven years in Toronto\, Canada\, she returned to Havana where she formed her band Habana Sana. Her CD Libre was awarded the 2014 Cubadisco Prize for best Hip Hop recording. While performing with HabanaSana in Havana\, Telmary continues to collaborate with a flurry of Cuban and international artists including Interactivo with whom she toured the U.S. in 2016\, Pedrito Martinez and Doctor John. \nFlaco Navaja \nFlaco Navaja is a singer\, poet\, actor\, who is born and raised in the Bronx. He sings in both Spanish and English and has toured with various groups across the globe. He currently resides in Humboldt Park\, Chicago where he leads his band\, Flaco Navaja and the Razor Blades. \nIf Héctor Lavoe Boxed Rubén Blades and KRS-1 was the referee you’d get Flaco. A Nostalgic old sound with brand new spoken word. \nNavaja’s original style of poetry combines singing\, beat-boxing\, and spoken word. He was the host of the legendary open mic showcase; “All That! Hip Hop Poetry & Jazz” at the famous Nuyorican Poets’ Cafe. He has performed at national and international venues and events. In 2003\, he toured internationally with the Tony Award winning Russell Simmons’ Def Poerty Jam and he has appeared on four episodes of the HBO series. \nNavaja is a member of Screen Actors Guild and has appeared in several films & television shows. \nLa Cantera \nDirected by piano player Adrian Ruiz\, La Cantera is SRBCC’s Afro-Caribbean Jazz performance ensemble for youth (ages 19-24).
