Its mission is to bring Puerto Rican cultural heritage to life and create a deep connection with the diaspora\, delivering authenticity and passion in every performance. DESCRIPTION:A Goodman Theatre Centennial Season Initiative \nInstructors: \n\nAfter years of teaching and performing both at SRBCC and Africaribe\, Melissa Duprey and Quincy Raggs bring to you their vast experiences within Afro-Puerto Rican music and Dance. \nEnglish \nBomba: Rhythm\, Resistance\, and Liberation\n\nA 2-hour introductory workshop in bomba percussion\, dance\, and history curated and presented by the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center \nBomba is more than music and dance—it is a living practice of resistance and memory\, created by enslaved Africans and their descendants in Puerto Rico. In this two-hour introduction\, participants will learn foundational bomba rhythms\, the call-and-response language between dancer and drummer\, and the basics of baile de bomba—where movement leads and the drum responds. \nAlongside the hands-on practice\, we’ll ground the experience in history: how bomba gatherings offered space for community\, cultural preservation\, and freedom-making\, especially in the years leading up to the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico (1873). We’ll also connect that legacy to the abolitionist struggle associated with Segundo Ruiz Belvis and Ramón Emeterio Betances—names that anchor SRBCC’s mission and the cultural work we carry forward in Chicago. \nCome for the rhythm. The tour offers a range of high-quality puppetry styles to create moments of community enjoyment while expanding the city’s base of puppet enthusiasts. The Tour once again presents two free\, family-friendly puppet shows\, this year from Spain and Baltimore\, to venues and community spaces all over the city. Stay tuned for dates\, times and locations. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpanish puppet artist Tian Gombau was walking barefoot on the beach one day when he suddenly realized there are so many stones on earth. He started to classify them and keep them as precious treasures\, thinking\, if you look at what’s inside them\, one realizes there is something more than just a stone. The result is an ingenious\, endearing\, 30-minute imagination-awakening experience for children using only inanimate objects. \n\n\n\n\n\nFor the past four years\, Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center has been proud to serve as a neighborhood partner of the Chicago International Puppet Theater Festival\, extending our mission of celebrating Afro-Caribbean and Latin arts into the world of contemporary puppetry. He has excelled as a performer of various musical genres and styles. He has performed in Albuquerque New Mexico\, with diverse groups such as the ABQ Jazz Orquestra\, under the musical direction of trumpeter Bobby Shew\, musical director of drummer Buddy Rich’s band. He has also worked with saxophonist Doug Lawrence (of Count Basie Orchestra)\, the company of gypsy guitarist José “Chuscales” Valle\, the Circus Luminous at the Lensic Theater in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, the flamenco repertory company Yiastros and two consecutive years in the Albuquerque Jazz Fest. In 2012\, “El Peru”\, as he’s affectionately known in Puerto Rico\,  participated as a percussionist in the reality show “Q’Viva! The Chosen”\, produced by Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. Chávez was invited to be part of the flamenco repertoire company Yjastros\, in the show “Tablao Flamenco at the CanyonRoad” in Santa Fe and “Houston Spanish & Flamenco Festival” with the Flamenco company of Jose “Chuscales” Valle. \nIn 2016 Enrique joined Orquesta el Macabeo\, performing at festivals like the Cervantino International Festival in Guanajuato\, Mexico. He appeared in Cadiz\, Spain at the Ibero-American Theater Festival with the show “Las hijas de la Bernarda”. He was also part of the group IFé\, which composed Caribbean electronic music\, where he performed at international festivals such as the Montreal Jazz Festival in Canada and the Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Most recently\, Chávez participated offering percussion clinics at the International Festival of Percussion at the Conservatory of Music in Puerto Rico and performed at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival with the group Emplegoste\, a collective that develops Afro-Puerto Rican music mixing electronic and psychedelic elements. He currently lives in Chicago IL\, where he works as a composer and music producer\, and plays percussion with different projects in Chicago and Puerto Rico.

DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, September 9th at 6pm\, the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Center hosts a presentation of Art Papi\, a 216-page bilingual book envisioned by Editor-in-Chief Miguel Figueroa about Puerto Rico’s contemporary history and subculture through an artistic lens. Appetizers by Jibaritos on Harlem and Wine reception at 6:00 pm. \nOn September 10th and 11th\, Figueroa will be presenting a two-day FREE workshop titled\, Reconnecting With Your Creative Self where the published and editor-in-chief of Art Papi will be sharing the tools that helped him overcome creative blocks and helped him during the creation of the book. \nArt Papi is an archival account of the creative flourishing that occurred on the island after Hurricane Maria and a questioning of our political and cultural landscape. DESCRIPTION:VENUE CHANGE  \nOn Friday September 5\, two days before Sunday’s “Arts In Solidarity” event\, organizers were informed that the venue Alhambra Palace had cancelled use of the venue due to perceived threats in the political climate enveloping the City of Chicago.  \nThe event organizers\, who are seasoned cultural advocates are unanimous in the decision to “go on with the show” – stating that presenting opportunities for communities to come together through the arts in times of stress\, as well as supporting fundraising for immigrant legal defense are crucial healing vehicles at this time. The benefit for the Midwest Immigrant Bond Fund has a new sense of immediacy as the weekend plans as advertised by the Whitehouse target local friends\, neighbors and co-workers.  \nThe program as announced below will continue with the same time and terms but at Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center (SRBCC). \nABOUT THE EVENT  \nAn ad-hoc volunteer collective of local arts presenters and advocates has come together to raise funds for legal defense and to speak out against the ongoing persecution of our family\, friends\, and neighbors by law enforcement agencies—often without due process. This group has curated a powerful event featuring cultural voices from across the community. All proceeds will support legal expenses resulting from detentions and prosecutions. \nParticipating artists confirmed to date are: \nCarpacho Y Su Super Combo\, Los Pleneros De Don Segundo\, Surabhi Ensemble\, Afrocolombian Band “Epa!”\, D.J. Damon Locks \nLuis Tubens – Emcee\, Speakers: Aislinn Pulley\, Jorge Mujica\, Alejandra Oliva\, and Sen. Graciela Guzman  \nThe organizers bring together this international chorus of voices to express solidarity with people targeted by ICE and other para-military forces. \nWe are alarmed by the attacks and the ongoing psychological and physical trauma they cause\, and seek to assist in adequately fighting the mounting legal battles immigrants are facing. \nThe program will raise funds for The Midwest Immigration Bond Fund  \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nDuring the event\, speakers will provide information on how you can help and a literature table will include education info\, “Know Your Rights”\, and other useful resources. \nThe organizers of the concert have donated their labor to create this event. The money raised above event production expenses will directly support the beneficiaries. The event is ticketed with a minimum suggested donation of $25 but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. \nThe event is open to all ages with parental supervision. \nThe non-profit concert producers are also accepting donations from event sponsors to offset the production expenses via HotHouse.   \n  \nABOUT THE ARTISTS  \nLOS PLENEROS DE DON SEGUNDO \nBorn at the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center (SRBCC)\, Los Pleneros de Don Segundo have been performing original plena music in Chicago since 2016. They have become one of the city’s most sought-after Afro-Puerto Rican folkloric groups\, known for their commitment to advancing the genre through original compositions and arrangements\, and a celebration of plena as music of resistance.  \nSURABHI ENSEMBLE\nThe Surabhi Ensemble is a Chicago-based world music collective that blends diverse musical traditions\, including Indian\, Arabic\, African\, and Spanish flamenco. Founded by Saraswathi Ranganathan (veena) and Carlo Basile (guitar) and featuring Ronnie Malley (oud) and Bob Garrett (percussion) along with special guests\, the ensemble tastefully fosters cross-cultural connections through music and dance. The ensemble often incorporates traditional dance forms from various cultures into their music performances.  \nCARPACHO Y SU SUPER COMBO \nCarpacho y su Super Combo is a fun\, high-energy group specializing in Colombian Salsa and other Tropical dance styles like Cumbia\, Merengue\, Latin Jazz\, and Cha Cha. Carpacho y su Super Combo started in 1986 with a main idea of integrating the band with musicians and sounds from various Latin American countries including Puerto Rico\, Ecuador\, and Colombia. \nAFROCOLOMBIAN BAND “EPA!” \nEcos del Pacifico Afrocolombia is a Chicago-based group formed in 2006 by Julio Cesar Montaño Montenegro and steeped in the Afro-Colombian music and dance traditions of the Pacific coast of Colombia. \nThe group features members of the Montaño Arboleda family and a diverse complement of Chicago musicians of various ethnicities performing on traditional Afro-Colombian percussion\, marimba\, guitar\, clarinet\, and bass. Ecos del Pacifico focuses on the Pacific cost sounds of Currulao\, one of the most African influenced-styles in all of Colombia\, The music is centered around a drum known as a “cununo”\, which superficially resembles the “alegre” drum (used in Cumbia)\, and a shaker known in parts of Colombia as a “guasá” or “guache”\, and Colombian marimba\, a wooden xylophone which resembles the African balafon. \nDAMON LOCKS featured DJ \nDamon Locks is a Chicago-based visual artist\, educator\, vocalist/musician and DJ. He attended the Art Institute of Chicago where he received his BFA in fine arts. Since 2014 he has been working with the Prisons and Neighborhood Arts Project at Stateville Correctional Center teaching art. He is a 2025 recipient of the Creative Capital Award. In 2017 he became a Soros Justice Media Fellow. He received a Helen Coburn Meier and Tim Meier Achievement Award in the Arts in 2015. In 2019\, he became a 3Arts Awardee. He spent 4 years as an artist in residence as a part of the Museum of Contemporary Arts’ SPACE Program\, introducing civically engaged art into the curriculum at Sarah E. Goode STEM Academy High School. He teaches Improvisation in the Sound Department at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Damon leads the Black Monument Ensemble\, is a member of New Future City Radio\, Exploding Star Orchestra and co-founded the band The Eternals. \nEMCEE:  LUIS TUBENS \nLuis Tubens\, a.k.a “Logan Lu”\, was born in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood and raised in Logan Square. In 2014\, he earned a B.A. in Communications\, media and theater from Northeastern Illinois University. Luis has performed poetry across the United States including with the GUILD COMPLEX\, Tia Chucha Press\, and the National Museum of Mexican Art. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nALEJANDRA OLIVA\, MIBF BOARD CO-VICE PRESIDENT \nAlejandra Oliva is the Co-Vice President of the Midwest Immigration Bond Fund\, as well as the author of the book Rivermouth: A Chronicle of Language\, Faith and Migration.  \nAISLINN PULLEY \nAislinn Pulley is a co-executive director of the Chicago Torture Justice Center founded out of the historic 2015 reparations ordinance for survivors of Chicago police torture. Aislinn is also the co-founder of Black Lives Matter Chicago. \nIl. STATE SENATOR GRACIELA GUZMÁN \nGraciela Guzmán (she/her/ella) serves as the state senator for District 20 and as an organizer for the Chicago Teachers Union. Before becoming state senator\, she served as chief of staff for Senator Cristina Pacione-Zayas and political director for her and Senator Omar Aquino. \nJORGE MUJICA  \nJorge Mujica emigrated to the United States from Mexico in 1987. He currently works as lead strategic campaigns organizer for Arise Chicago\, a non-profit organization addressing the needs of low-wage workers\, particularly stolen wages. DESCRIPTION:Join puppeteers Gandul Gandulero (San Juan) and Tom Lee (Chicago) as they take you through a hands on exploration of shadow puppetry and musical storytelling at SRBCC’s one of a kind performance space in Hermosa.  Beginning with an introduction to shadow traditions from around the world\, participants will learn puppet joints\, controls and techniques using templates and materials provided by the instructors.  The workshop will then progress to original ideas and stories created from scratch before culminating in an epic sharing of shadows and sound!  All experience levels are welcome!  Children under 10 will do best accompanied by an adult. \n\nFREE RSVP
