SUMMARY:100 Free Acts of Theater: Bomba and The Abolition of Slavery in Puerto Rico
DESCRIPTION:A Goodman Theatre Centennial Season Initiative \nInstructors: \n\nAfter years of teaching and performing both at SRBCC and Africaribe\, Melissa Duprey and Quincy Raggs bring to you their vast experiences within Afro-Puerto Rican music and Dance. \nEnglish \nBomba: Rhythm\, Resistance\, and Liberation\n\nA 2-hour introductory workshop in bomba percussion\, dance\, and history curated and presented by the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center \nBomba is more than music and dance—it is a living practice of resistance and memory\, created by enslaved Africans and their descendants in Puerto Rico. In this two-hour introduction\, participants will learn foundational bomba rhythms\, the call-and-response language between dancer and drummer\, and the basics of baile de bomba—where movement leads and the drum responds. \nAlongside the hands-on practice\, we’ll ground the experience in history: how bomba gatherings offered space for community\, cultural preservation\, and freedom-making\, especially in the years leading up to the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico (1873). We’ll also connect that legacy to the abolitionist struggle associated with Segundo Ruiz Belvis and Ramón Emeterio Betances—names that anchor SRBCC’s mission and the cultural work we carry forward in Chicago. \nCome for the rhythm. Leave with deeper connection—to your body\, to community\, and to an art form rooted in dignity\, defiance\, and joy. \nNo experience necessary. All bodies welcome. \n100 Free Acts of Theater \nWhat: As part of Goodman Theatre’s Centennial Season in 2025-2026\, we would like to gift 100 Free Acts of Theatre to the city of Chicago. An “act of theatre” may be a performance\, or a workshop encouraging community members to make art themselves. It may be an educational opportunity to learn about the history of theatre in Chicago\, or to help young folks learn about empathy through storytelling. Across all 100 Free Acts\, we will create engagement opportunities for Chicagoans of any age or background. \nWhy: We want to give back to the community that has supported us for the last 100 years by making theatre accessible to Chicagoans beyond those who have the means to join us for a performance or event in our theatre downtown. We want to share our theatrical offerings further\, as well as highlight existing local talent in other communities. \nWhen: July 2025 – August 2026 \nWhere: Spread across all 50 of Chicago’s official wards. \nCuándo: Julio de 2025 – agosto de 2026 \nDónde: Distribuido a través de los 50 distritos oficiales (wards) de Chicago \n\nRSVP\n\n\n  \nSegundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center is a Proud 2026 Partner of 100 Free Acts of Theater \n\n\nSee all events here. \n

SUMMARY:Aquí\, Somos: 55 Years of SRBCC with Agua Sol y Sereno
DESCRIPTION:Aquí\, Somos: 55 Years of SRBCC is Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center’s signature anniversary fundraiser—an unforgettable night celebrating 55 years of Puerto Rican culture\, community\, and artistic excellence in Chicago. \nThis year’s program features Agua\, Sol y Sereno (Puerto Rico)\, led by Artistic Director Pedro Adorno Irizarry\, presenting an original performance created in Chicago through “Batey de la Memoria” a week-long series of workshops and creative labs with local artists and community members. Rooted in bomba’s power as a living\, communal art form\, the work weaves voice\, rhythm\, movement\, and image—inviting story\, humor\, memory\, and social commentary into the batey through purposeful improvisation and visual elements such as masks\, flags\, and printed or drawn pieces. \nThis performance embodies everything SRBCC stands for: Puerto Rican artists from the Island and Chicago-based creatives coming together in a truly multidisciplinary celebration of culture\, community\, and collaboration. \nYour ticket and donation directly support SRBCC’s year-round programming and artist fund at a critical moment—helping sustain a cultural home that continues to uplift artists and serve our community. \nAbout our guest artist: Agua\, Sol y Sereno from Puerto Rico \nAgua\, Sol y Sereno (ASYS)\, founded by Pedro Adorno and Cathy Vigo in 1993\, is a theater collective—now composed of eight artists—whose aesthetic and community-based work remains in constant dialogue with social realities and the search for the human being’s inner poetics. The collective embraces multiple artistic disciplines within its theatrical practice\, including painting\, dance\, music\, and writing. Its creative workshops are designed to explore the questions and imagination of people of all ages across all kinds of communities. ASYS has created more than twenty original theater works grounded in a deep ecological and historical consciousness. Through its comparsas and performance actions\, the collective brings art into the street\, engaging themes of local and international relevance. Rooted in Caribbean experimentation and in active relationship with both the outer world and the inner world\, ASYS’s aesthetic and pedagogical practice generates cultural\, artistic\, and philosophical processes of profound impact.
