Groups such as\, Los Hermanos Cepeda\, Areyto\, Conjunto Tipikón\, Pleneros del Truco\, Truco y Zaperoko\, Los Majaderos de Cachete\, Yubá Iré\, Roberto Roena\, José Alberto “El Canario\,” and Tito Nieves. Since Tito Matos’ return to Puerto Rico\, for over 20 years he has formed part of Viento de Agua.

This group’s unwavering support of the community through consistent production of exceptional events that included fund raisers for children with HIV. \nThey produced the first all ages inclusive event for 15 years\, “Sizzling Mambo Sundays” at the Presidential Towers. Deeply committed to uniting cultures\, Cultural Expressions supports\, mentors\, and uplifts both emerging and established artists while celebrating the origins and history of Latin and Afro-Latin music and dance through the salsa congress concept. \nIn 2002 they produced the first Chicago International Salsa Congress (CISC) now in its 22nd year. CISC artistic director\, Saladeen Alamin was awarded the Andy Vasquez Award for contributions to Latin dance at the World Salsa Congress\, San Juan\, PR\, July\, 2003. Armitage Ave. (Hermosa) \nRunning Time: 45 mins \nFree Neighborhood Tour: Fostering an Appreciation of Puppetry Throughout the City \n\nThe Free Neighborhood Tour fosters an appreciation for puppetry throughout the city by bringing free\, family-friendly performances to locations outside of Chicago’s theaters\, but areas in the city where people may not have the chance to see puppetry very often. The tour offers a range of high-quality puppetry styles in order to create moments of community enjoyment while expanding the base of puppet enthusiasts. For 2025\, the Tour is twice the size of previous years presenting TWO free\, family-friendly puppet shows from Puerto Rico and Vermont at venues and community spaces all over the city. This program was made possible with special support from Kristy & Brandon Moran\, Chicago Park District’s Night Out in the Parks Program\, and UChicago.

SUMMARY:La Cantera & Friends with Roy McGrath
DESCRIPTION:La Cantera hosts…Roy McGrath \nRoy McGrath is a tenor saxophonist\, composer\, bandleader and sideman living in Chicago\, IL. He recently graduated with a master’s degree in Music from Northwestern University\, where he studied under Victor Goines (saxophonist for Jazz at Lincoln Center and Director of Jazz Studies at Northwestern University). He transcribes\, arranges\, and composes music for a variety of situations\, and currently works as the Woodwind/Brasswind instructor at Flatt’s and Shape Musical Academy in Chicago. \nIn addition to his studies\, Roy has gained valuable performance experience in a variety of settings. In 2009\, he joined the Camp-of-the-Woods wind ensemble playing Broadway\, big band\, contemporary jazz\, classical\, and worship music in Speculator\, NY. He performed with this ensemble for four years\, including serving as the Director of Jazz Small Ensembles and Big Band for two years. He has taught masterclasses on improvisation in Mexico and at the Universidad del Turabo in Puerto Rico; and worked for Suman Entertainment as a tenor saxophonist and doubler on alto/clarinet/flute on cruise ships in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. \nRoy has played on numerous recordings\, both as sideman and band leader. He recorded on Easy Company’s self-titled album in 2009\, produced by five-time Grammy winner John Snyder and five-time Grammy winning recording engineer David Farrell. In 2010\, he recorded an album as leader entitled Long Shot. In 2013 he played on Gustavo Cortinas’ album Snapshot\, and toured Mexico in support. He has been recognized in competitions\, and placed third in the Union League Civic Arts Foundation Jazz Improvisation Competition in 2013 (Chicago\, IL).

DESCRIPTION:Part of the Series: Re-imagining Tropiques\, An homage to AIMÉ AND SUZANNE CÉSAIRE  (multipart program)\n\n\nPresented by Hothouse\n\n\nThe goal of this workshop is to guide students to expand their individual musical narrative by integrating influences from contemporary classical music\, irregular rhythms\, Afro-Cuban polyrhythm and avant-garde improvisation into their musical vocabulary\, to transcend their musical stylistic limits. During the class\, Cuban teaching artist Aruán Ortiz will emphasize the use and embellishment of rhythmic\, polyrhythmic patterns and permutations; as a melodic material during the process of improvisation and real time composition. Participants will engage in discussion about harmonic expansion and control of phrasing\, to achieve a personal sound and original perspective. Attention will be paid to the importance of developing exercises to build musical structures using different harmonic and melodic systems\, and music analysis.\n\nPianist\, violist\, and composer Aruán Ortiz—born in Santiago de Cuba\, and resident of Brooklyn—has been an active figure in the progressive jazz and avant-garde scene in the US for more than 15 years.\n\nSince his arrival in the United States\, Aruán has played\, toured\, and recorded with jazz luminaries such as Wadada Leo Smith\, Don Byron\, Greg Osby\, Wallace Roney\, Nicole Mitchell\, Cameron Brown\, Michael Formanek\, William Parker\, Adam Rudolph\, Andrew Cyrille\, Henry Grimes\, Marshall Allen\, Hamiet Bluiett\, Oliver Lake\, RufusReid\, Graham Haynes\, Terri Lyne Carrington\, and Nasheet Waits. After incorporating Bomba into their repertoire in the last two years\, the group can adapt to a wide variety of formats\, from a basic 4-member ensemble to a full Puerto Rican carnival experience with horns\, vejigantes\, cabezudos and stilt wa \n\n\n\nSambrazilian (Brazil/Samba)\n\nFounded by Damares Santos and Elaine Norwood in late 2019\, both from Río de Janeiro\, Sambrazilian’s goal is to deliver the authentic experience of Carnival all over Illinois. The group’s mission is to promote the rich culture of Panama through dance and is known for its colorful traditional costumes\, such as the Panamanian pollera\, and by its interpretation of such popular dances such as the tamborito and cumbia\, which are fundamental parts to Panamanian folklore. \n\n\nChicago Salsa Congress (Mixed)\n\n\nThe Chicago International Salsa Congress (CISC) is the longest\, continuously running salsa congress in the Americas. Open to the general public\, beloved by loyal Latin music and dance aficionados internationally\, this spectacular showcase of Latin and Afro-Caribbean dance\, music and culture is unsurpassed among Chicago’s annual Latin events. As a rapper\, Telmary uses her distinctive voice\, at times deep and soulful\, at times fast and aggressive\, to proclaim a positive\, empowering message that contrasts with the genre’s commercial norm. After working with Free Hole Negro in 1999 and Interactivo in 2002\, she launched her solo career with A Diario\, produced by acclaimed Cuban pianist and Interactivo leader Roberto Carcasses and winner of the Cubadisco award for Best Hip Hop Album in 2007. After seven years in Toronto\, Canada\, she returned to Havana where she formed her band Habana Sana. Her CD Libre was awarded the 2014 Cubadisco Prize for best Hip Hop recording. While performing with HabanaSana in Havana\, Telmary continues to collaborate with a flurry of Cuban and international artists including Interactivo with whom she toured the U.S. in 2016\, Pedrito Martinez and Doctor John. \nFlaco Navaja \nFlaco Navaja is a singer\, poet\, actor\, who is born and raised in the Bronx. He sings in both Spanish and English and has toured with various groups across the globe. He currently resides in Humboldt Park\, Chicago where he leads his band\, Flaco Navaja and the Razor Blades. \nIf Héctor Lavoe Boxed Rubén Blades and KRS-1 was the referee you’d get Flaco. A Nostalgic old sound with brand new spoken word. \nNavaja’s original style of poetry combines singing\, beat-boxing\, and spoken word. He was the host of the legendary open mic showcase; “All That! In 2003\, he toured internationally with the Tony Award winning Russell Simmons’ Def Poerty Jam and he has appeared on four episodes of the HBO series. \nNavaja is a member of Screen Actors Guild and has appeared in several films & television shows. \nLa Cantera \nDirected by piano player Adrian Ruiz\, La Cantera is SRBCC’s Afro-Caribbean Jazz performance ensemble for youth (ages 19-24). The program was born at Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center in 2018 and is known for incorporating young veterans of Ruiz Belvis’ Afro-Caribbean Jazz and Afro-Latin Percussion apprenticeships with guest appearances by the city’s top local and touring Latin music talent. Through a dynamic schedule participants engage in the business of musical performance\, learning to leverage their talents and exposure. DESCRIPTION:Since 2023\, SRBCC and The California Clipper Lounge\, two long-standing Chicago-based hubs for artists\, have been working together to create a supportive and creative space for young Latin Jazz musicians. Through this unique collaboration\, members of La Cantera (SRBCC’s Afro-Caribbean Jazz internship for ages 19-24) have the opportunity to collaborate\, experiment\, and learn from award-winning touring and local professional artists. Our residency program occurs every third Friday of the month from 6 pm to 9 pm at The California Clipper\, located in the heart of Humboldt Park at 1002 N. California Ave.\, Chicago IL. By attending these events\, our audience is supporting a platform for emerging musicians to showcase their skills and connect with the vibrant jazz community in Chicago. \nLa Cantera incorporates young veterans of Ruiz Belvis’ Afro-Caribbean Jazz and Afro-Latin Percussion apprenticeships.
