SUMMARY:Miguel Zenón & Luis Perdomo Master Class and Jam Session
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by SRBCC’s La Cantera\, this Master Class & Jam Session with recent Grammy Winners Miguel Zenón and Luis Perdomo is another in a series of SRBCC-produced opportunities for emerging and established Chicago-based artists to learn and exchange ideas with world-class musicians. \nGrammy Winner and Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón represents a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced and blended the often contradictory poles of innovation and tradition. Widely considered as one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists and composers of his generation\, he has also developed a unique voice as a conceptualist\, concentrating his efforts on perfecting a fine mix between Jazz and his many musical influences. \nBorn and raised in San Juan\, Puerto Rico\, Zenón has built a distinguished career as a leader\, releasing fifteen albums under his own name. In addition\, he has honed his artistic identity by collaborating with both established jazz masters and the music’s younger innovators\, irrespective of style and genre. Zenón has toured and/or recorded with artists including The SFJAZZ Collective\, Charlie Haden\, Fred Hersch\, Kenny Werner\, David Sánchez\, Danilo Perez\, The Village Vanguard Orchestra\, Kurt Elling\, Guillermo Klein & Los Guachos\, The Jeff Ballard Trio\, Antonio Sanchez\, Brian Lynch\, Joey Calderazzo\, Steve Coleman\, Ray Barreto\, Andy Montañez\, Jerry Gonzalez & The Fort Apache Band\, The Mingus Big Band and Bobby Hutcherson. \nEl Arte Del Bolero Vol. 2 – with Luis Perdomo (Miel Music 2023) – The follow up to their Grammy Nominated 2021 release\, this album further explores the Latin American Songbook in a Duo format\, featuring music written by composers hailing from Puerto Rico\, Venezuela\, Panama and México. El Arte Del Bolero Vol. 2 won a 2024 Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. \nReserve

SUMMARY:Jorell Meléndez Badillo & Juan González - Puerto Rico: A National History
DESCRIPTION:In this masterful work of scholarship\, Meléndez-Badillo sheds light on the vibrant cultures of the archipelago in the centuries before the arrival of Columbus and captures the full sweep of Puerto Rico’s turbulent history in the centuries that followed\, from the first indigenous insurrection against colonial rule in 1511—led by the powerful chieftain Agüeybaná II—to the establishment of the Commonwealth in 1952. He deftly portrays the contemporary period and the intertwined though unequal histories of the archipelago and the continental United States. \nPuerto Rico is an engaging\, sometimes personal\, and consistently surprising history of colonialism\, revolt\, and the creation of a national identity\, offering new perspectives not only on Puerto Rico and the Caribbean but on the United States and the Atlantic world more broadly. \nReserve
