Deconstructing Rhythmic Patterns in Afro-Caribbean Music

The goal of this workshop is to guide students to expand their individual musical narrative by integrating influences from contemporary classical music, irregular rhythms, Afro-Cuban polyrhythm and avant-garde improvisation into their musical vocabulary, to transcend their musical stylistic limits.

Fabiola Méndez: Flora Campesina

Fabiola Méndez, the Boston Music Awards 2023 Latin Artist of the Year, blends Folk, Afro-Caribbean, and Jazz to create a sound all her own on the ten-string Puerto Rican cuatro. Fabiola and her band present new and original music from their latest release, Flora Campesina, merging traditional Puerto Rican sounds and folklore with upbeat grooves and contemporary influences.

Roy McGrath is a tenor saxophonist, composer, bandleader and sideman living in Chicago, IL. He graduated with a master’s degree in Music from Northwestern University, where he studied under Victor Goines (saxophonist for Jazz at Lincoln Center and Director of Jazz Studies at Northwestern University).

The Free Neighborhood Tour fosters an appreciation for puppetry throughout the city by bringing free, family-friendly performances to locations outside of Chicago’s theaters, but areas in the city where people may not have the chance to see puppetry very often. The tour offers a range of high-quality puppetry styles in order to create moments of community enjoyment while expanding the base of puppet enthusiasts. For 2025, the Tour is twice the size of previous years presenting TWO free, family-friendly puppet shows from Puerto Rico and Vermont at venues and community spaces all over the city. This program was made possible with special support from Kristy & Brandon Moran, Chicago Park District's Night Out in the Parks Program, and UChicago.

This year we enlisted the help of Noel Rosado (Viento de Agua, La Máquina Insular, Roberto Roena y su Apollo Sound) to take our plena to the next level. Joining Rosado we have Los Pleneros de Don Segundo “agrandado” with a heavy horn section. We will have food while supplies last, BYOB policy y mucha plena!

La Ruta Ana Otero

SRBCC presents Daniela Santos and her trio in the US Premiere of “La Ruta Ana Otero” a tribute to the first Puerto Rican woman to be an internationally recognized conductor, composer and pianist. The varied program includes works from 1870 to the present day: Waltzes, mazurcas, boleros, Puerto Rican danzas and original compositions, including the only surviving work composed by Ana Otero herself in Paris, “Premiere Penseé”.
