A Goodman Theatre Centennial Season Initiative

Instructors:

A 2-hour introductory workshop in bomba percussion, dance, and history curated and presented by the Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center

Bomba is more than music and dance—it is a living practice of resistance and memory, created by enslaved Africans and their descendants in Puerto Rico. In this two-hour introduction, participants will learn foundational bomba rhythms, the call-and-response language between dancer and drummer, and the basics of baile de bomba—where movement leads and the drum responds.

Alongside the hands-on practice, we’ll ground the experience in history: how bomba gatherings offered space for community, cultural preservation, and freedom-making, especially in the years leading up to the abolition of slavery in Puerto Rico (1873). We’ll also connect that legacy to the abolitionist struggle associated with Segundo Ruiz Belvis and Ramón Emeterio Betances—names that anchor SRBCC’s mission and the cultural work we carry forward in Chicago.

100 Free Acts of Theater

What: As part of Goodman Theatre’s Centennial Season in 2025-2026, we would like to gift 100 Free Acts of Theatre to the city of Chicago. An “act of theatre” may be a performance, or a workshop encouraging community members to make art themselves. It may be an educational opportunity to learn about the history of theatre in Chicago, or to help young folks learn about empathy through storytelling. Across all 100 Free Acts, we will create engagement opportunities for Chicagoans of any age or background.

Why: We want to give back to the community that has supported us for the last 100 years by making theatre accessible to Chicagoans beyond those who have the means to join us for a performance or event in our theatre downtown. We want to share our theatrical offerings further, as well as highlight existing local talent in other communities.

When: July 2025 – August 2026

Bomba: Ritmo, Resistencia y Liberación
Taller introductorio de 2 horas sobre percusión, baile e historia de la bomba

La bomba es mucho más que música y baile: es una práctica viva de resistencia y memoria, creada por personas africanas esclavizadas y sus descendientes en Puerto Rico. En este taller de dos horas, las y los participantes aprenderán ritmos fundamentales, el lenguaje de llamado y respuesta entre bailador/a y tambor, y las bases del baile de bomba—donde el movimiento guía y el tambor contesta.

Junto a la práctica, compartiremos contexto histórico: cómo los bailes de bomba fueron espacios de encuentro, preservación cultural y construcción de libertad, especialmente en los años previos a la abolición de la esclavitud en Puerto Rico (1873). También enlazaremos ese legado con la lucha abolicionista asociada a Segundo Ruiz Belvis y Ramón Emeterio Betances—nombres que sostienen la misión de SRBCC y el trabajo cultural que continuamos en Chicago.

Una iniciativa de la Temporada del Centenario de Goodman Theatre

Qué: Como parte de la Temporada del Centenario de Goodman Theatre en 2025–2026, nos gustaría obsequiar a la ciudad de Chicago 100 Free Acts of Theatre. Un “acto de teatro” puede ser una función o un taller que invite a miembros de la comunidad a crear arte por sí mismos. Puede ser una oportunidad educativa para aprender sobre la historia del teatro en Chicago, o para ayudar a jóvenes a desarrollar la empatía a través de la narración de historias. A través de los 100 Free Acts, crearemos oportunidades de participación para gente de Chicago de cualquier edad o procedencia.

Por qué: Queremos mostrar cariño a la comunidad que nos ha apoyado durante los últimos 100 años, haciendo que el teatro sea accesible para gente de Chicago, más allá de quienes tienen los recursos para acompañarnos en una función o evento en nuestro teatro. Queremos ampliar el alcance de nuestra oferta teatral, así como destacar el talento local existente en otras comunidades.
